NWACC Announces Enrollment for New Weekend Trail Technician Program

Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) is thrilled to announce that enrollment is now open for its new Trail Technician Program, set to begin on September 13. This innovative program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the trail industry, offering comprehensive training in trail construction, maintenance, and management through convenient weekend classes over a 12-week period.

The Trail Technician Program at NWACC provides students with hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge in essential areas of the field. The curriculum includes courses in trail construction and maintenance, planning and design, heavy equipment operation, welding for trails, and small engine repair. Graduates will be well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the trail industry and contribute to the development of sustainable trail systems.

Program Highlights:

  • Trail Construction and Maintenance: Practical training in building and maintaining trails.
  • Planning and Design: Learn to design effective and enjoyable trail systems.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Hands-on experience with machinery used in trail construction.
  • Welding for Trails: Develop specialized welding skills for trail infrastructure projects.
  • Small Engine Repair: Training in the maintenance and repair of trail maintenance equipment.

The Trail Technician Program is structured to accommodate busy schedules, with classes held on weekends over a 12-week period. This flexible format makes it accessible for working professionals, volunteers, and those with other weekday commitments.

In 12 weekends, students can complete:

  • Certificate of Proficiency in Trail Technician
  • Certificate of Proficiency in Trail Management

These Certificates of Proficiency can be used to complete a Technical Certificate in Trail Construction and Management when additional Core Construction courses are added.

NWACC’s program is offered in partnership with leading organizations such as American Trails, the Professional Trail Builders Association (PTBA), the Trail Skills Project, The DIRTT Project, Trail Tools, and IMBA Europe. Local partners also provide students with community-focused learning opportunities and practical application experiences.

"Our weekend classes allow individuals to gain valuable skills without disrupting their weekday responsibilities, and our partnerships with top organizations ensure a high-quality educational experience."

Graduates of the program will be prepared to achieve NOCTI (National Occupational Competency Testing Institute) Level-1 Trail Technician Certification, further demonstrating their expertise and readiness for the workforce.

The Trail Technician Program is ideal for individuals currently working in the trail industry, aspiring trail builders, trail bosses, and volunteers passionate about trail development and maintenance.
