The more you know about the transfer process, the easier it will be to transfer smoothly. Make sure you have frequent appointments with your advisor or transfer services to ensure you stay on track.

Planning Your Transfer

Meet with University Reps

Representatives from four year institutions frequently visit NWACC. During these visits, university representatives are available to meet with you about their institutions programs, admissions process, and to answer your questions.

Available Degrees

Make sure the institution you plan to attend offers the degree you want. If you are unsure of your degree, work on a career search and find your major as soon as possible.

Online Resources

Transferring to a four-year institution goes beyond admissions. To make sure you will fit in and can afford your education, research financial aid, scholarships, student life and campus housing options.

Visit 

Visit the campus you plan to attend when students are on campus. Don't forget to inquire about visitor parking and make appropriate appointments ahead of time.

Talk With an Advisor

Talk with an advisor in your area of study if possible, however, there are limitations on the advice they can give if you if you have not yet been admitted.  Until your transcripts are evaluated during the admission process, an institution cannot tell you exactly how many hours you need to finish your degree.

Definition of Transfer 

Make sure you understand how the institution defines "transfer" and that you fit the requirements for admission purposes. There is usually a minimum number of transfer credits required or you may be admitted as a freshman instead of a transfer student.

Deadlines

Pay attention to scholarship and registration deadlines. In general, apply very early in the semester prior to your planned transfer. Check your transfer institution's deadline dates - you may need to apply earlier.

Admission Requirements 

Pay attention to admission for particular majors and look for prerequisite courses for major requirements that you may be able to complete prior to transferring.

Course Re-evaluations 

If necessary, ask about the process to request course re-evaluations. Keep a copy of your original institution's academic catalog (hard copy or CD) or check to see if they are online and accessible.

Follow Policies

When requirements conflict among institutions, always follow the policies of the institution from which you plan to graduate.

Taking Care of Business

Make sure all business is taken care of at your current institution. Don't leave unpaid bills, incomplete courses, etc.
